Dracula fishbowl#1
Each student taking part in Ihubreads must take part in two fishbowl Discussions. For the Dracula club since there is 14 people there are two questions and the group must break into two separate groups so that there are less people. In fishbowl discussions if there are more than 8 people it doesn’t go so well because many don’t get the chance to say what they wish.
Each person in the fish bowl discussions must gain a deep understand of question and the topic that it is about. They also must be well prepared with a sheet of notes. So that they can refer to the page of notes if they get stuck or need something to support their statement or argument. Most important each participant must have a strong thesis statement and your argument will show multiple points that support your thesis.
The group I was in was the group that has this for it question: Bram Stoker is often credited with the creation if the vampire archetype. How was Dracula a caricature of people in his time and how are modern vampire characters different to that caricature? How does the change in the archetype reflect changes in our culture?
My Thesis: Vampires in Dracula’s day where not part of society and where seen as evil and ugly creatures and had no care for others when today’s vampires try to fit in and to have more humanity.
Now the actual in class discussion is not the only part of the discussion, there is also the only part. This only part takes place on the Moodle site. Mr. Soiseth creates a forum then everyone posts their thesis and we continue from the earlier discussion.
Unfortunately the week that this online discussion went on was also one of my busy weeks not only where a group of us where going out to other schools to present there was also the open house for the school. So I would miss time to do work so after school when it would be time to do my homework I would be doing the work i missed and tried to keep on track but the fish bowl discussion just kept slipping my mind allowing me to only have the time to make one post which is very sad.
For the next fishbowl discussion my goal is to post way more. Even though I only really like the face to face discussion because I feel like I’m able to explain and get my point across easier. When I’m written out the posts to put on the forum it takes me so much time and I feel like it’s not getting the point I want through. But the only thing I can do to get better is participate more and hope that helps.
The 2&3 meeting
For the second and third meeting they were much shorter. The only thing we really talked about was a quick review of what’s happened. Then we would set a point that everyone must read too. We would also remind each other who needs to post a review for what chapter. Another thing we picked up was a conflict of science vs. supernatural.
